Leaders in Barcelona, Detroit, London, Melbourne, Milan, and Portland, Ore., are all working toward a particular vision. The 15-minute city. It’s an idea that in 15 minutes of just walking through a city, a person can experience the fullness of that city. This concept was developed mainly to reduce urban carbon emissions, but the idea is evolving into a reimagination of our cities as not just a series of block seperated for living, working, and entertainment, but as canvases of neighborhoods in which almost all residents’ needs can be met within 15 minutes of their homes on foot, by bike, or on public transit. Street space previously dedicated to cars is being freed up, making way for gardens, bike lanes, and sports and leisure facilities, which despite Covid-19 and changing dynamics of societal connection, will hopefully make for more welcoming cities.
